CLEAR Caribbean:
Mangrove and seagrass restoration
Blue Carbon Trust partners to restore seagrass and mangroves in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
The Blue Carbon Trust is delighted to co-fund a new three-year initiative led by the Centre for Livelihoods, Ecosystems, Adaptation and Resilience in the Caribbean (CLEAR Caribbean) to protect and restore critical blue carbon habitats in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
The project will map, monitor and restore mangrove forests and seagrass meadows at key sites across Union Island, Mayreau and the Tobago Cays Marine Park.
These ecosystems are vital for carbon storage, coastal protection, and biodiversity. They provide important habitats for endangered species such as Green Turtles, but they have suffered from anchoring damage, wastewater pollution, and recent hurricane impacts.
Through a strong community-based approach, CLEAR and its partners will establish two mangrove nurseries, engage local stakeholders in restoration work, and train “coral gardeners” and community divers to assist with habitat monitoring. The initiative complements a wider Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF) Ridge-to-Reef programme, creating powerful synergies for ecosystem resilience and sustainable livelihoods.
By supporting this project, the Blue Carbon Trust is investing in nature-based climate solutions that restore blue carbon ecosystems, strengthen community resilience, and advance the protection of coastal habitats across the Caribbean.
